BIRD WATCHING: 7 miles north of Aldbrough is Hornsea Mere, the largest freshwater lake in Yorkshire and an RSPB Nature reserve. North of Aldbrough, approximately 25 miles lies Flamborough Head, providing a haven for thousands of seabirds, and at the appropriate times of year, boat trips are offered to view the Puffin colonies. The adventurous will also want to discover the unique Spurn Point, approximately 25 miles south east of Aldbrough.

HISTORY: Burton Agnes Hall and Burton Constable Hall  are both outstanding Elizabethan country houses,  and Georgian Sledmere House, all within a short distance. The historic town of Beverley with its famous Gothic Minster is just 14 miles, and Hull, proud of its Fishing Heritage and Town Docks Museums, is 12 miles west.  Hornsea has its own award winning museum of rural life. The historic city of York is approximately 35 miles drive.

GARDENS: Sledmere has 2,000 acres of parklands and gardens landscaped by Capability Brown. At Burnby Hall in Pocklington, approximately 25 miles drive, is host to the finest collection of waterlillies in Europe.

WALKS: The Humber Bridge country park is the starting point of the Wolds Way, and just north of Bridlington are many breathtaking views of the Heritage coast, including some of the tallest cliffs in the country.               Our coastline boasts over 40 miles of sandy beaches, and at nearby Mappleton the beach is easily accessible, when on an early morning walk you will regularly see visiting porpoise rolling in the waves, and on rare occasions seals are spotted basking in the early morning sun.

FISHING: Local beaches are ideal for fishing, mackerel fishing is a favorite. Bridlington offers daily sea fishing trips and is just 20 miles north of Aldbrough.  In addition to the sea, there are fishing lakes situated in Aldbrough (1 mile from the cottage), and fishing may be organised by prior arrangement. Pike fishing on Hornsea Mere - Yorkshire’s largest freshwater lake, is a possibility!
